A cold process stream is heated in series by six exchangers, each against a hotter stream. We choose each exchanger's area. Effectiveness rises with area but with diminishing returns, so the outlet temperature builds up stage by stage toward the target. Area costs money and the target carries a shortfall penalty, so the good design puts area where the temperature driving force is largest rather than spreading it evenly. Score is area cost plus shortfall penalty, to minimise. 6-D problem.

The JS objective is a line-for-line port of
example_applications/heat_exchanger_network and agrees to floating-point
tolerance. Bars are the chosen areas; the line is the cold stream's temperature rising
through the stages toward the 140 C target.
